Mitchell, Brody, and I went to Wal-Mart to see what it would be like to be blind. I was the blind guy when we went to Wal-Mart. I acted normal just trying to be blind. I wore dark sunglasses and I had a walking stick we borrowed from Mitchell. When we walked in we got the usual awkard stares you get when you are different. I told Mitchell and Brody to let me be to see if anyone would help me if I needed it. First, I went to the bathroom. I walked into a wall next to the bathroom opening pretending there was a door there. I waited for someone to say something and they didn't. When I saw an employee I asked if they could unlock the door. She said there was no door and I said I was blind and then I told her I was blind and asked for the bathroom. She then guided me to the bathroom. After that I went to the music department and asked for the country selection. They told me not understanding I was blind. I stayed there asked them to walk me to it since I couldn't see and they did then they left. I was kind of dumbfounded they didn't stay with since I couldn't see the CDs. My time at Wal-Mart showed that if you are different you will get stares and if they don't know you, they probably won't help you even if you have a condition.
On Monday afternoon, Brody, Cody, and I went to Scheels, Wal-Mart, and Bdubs. We acted like we were blind and we wore big, black sunglasses and carried a walking stick. When we were at bdubs we walked in and got a table, and while I acted like I was blind, Cody and Brody looked at some of the other people enjoying the delicious food. When we were sitting down, I just sat there not looking around at all to give the impression that I can’t see, and Brody and Cody looked to see if anybody was looking at us. Mostly all of the customers gave us strange looks. It looked like they knew I was not blind and it seemed like they wondered why we were doing this.
On 9/5/2011, Cody, Mitchell, and I went to Scheels and I was pretending to be a blind man while Mitch and Cody were my two helpers. When we got there, I noticed that there were a lot of people staring at me. They had a look of disgust on their faces as if I were faking being blind, which I clearly was. It felt weird to have all those people staring at me. The younger people who knew me or have seen me before just laughed, but when I passed by older citizens, that was when I received the most dirty looks. I really just wanted to tell them that it was a project for school but, I stayed strong. All in all, I didn’t enjoy the attention given to me while I was pretending to be blind.
This project taught us how hard it would be if we were blind. It showed what people think of someone who is blind and and the looks that blind people get. Some people treat them as if they are just like everybody else, but others give weird looks or mean looks.
